Dormant flower summer management

<

During the hot summer months, some bulbous and flowering plants enter a period of slow growth as their metabolism slows down. To survive the heat, they go into dormancy, which can be either evergreen or deciduous. For example, plants like Begonia, Clivia, and Geranium retain their green leaves during dormancy, which is referred to as "evergreen dormancy." On the other hand, flowers such as daffodils, hyacinths, cyclamen, and tulips lose their leaves after dormancy, known as "deciduous dormancy." Proper care during this time is crucial to ensure these plants survive the summer and remain healthy for the next growing season. First, it's important to reduce light exposure and improve air circulation. As summer begins, place dormant plants in a cool, shaded, and well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, which can stress the plants further. You can use shade cloths or build awnings if possible. Additionally, misting around the pots can help lower temperatures and increase humidity, creating a more comfortable environment for the plants. Second, water carefully and control the amount. Dormant plants don’t need a lot of water, so overwatering can be harmful. Since their root activity is low during dormancy, excessive moisture can lead to root rot. However, under-watering can cause the roots to dry out and wither. The best approach is to keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. Check the soil regularly and water only when necessary. Third, protect plants from heavy rain and waterlogging. Summer often brings sudden downpours, which can flood the pots and damage the roots or bulbs. This is especially dangerous for evergreen-dormant plants, as water accumulation can cause them to drop their leaves. To prevent this, place potted plants in sheltered areas where they are protected from wind and rain. Ensure proper drainage by using well-aerated soil and containers with drainage holes. By following these steps, you can help your dormant plants thrive through the summer and prepare them for a strong return in the next growing season. With careful attention and thoughtful care, even the most delicate flowers can survive the heat and bloom again.
