Three Gorges Black Chicken Breeding Technology
Chicken leukocyte protozoonosis is a serious anemic disease affecting chickens, caused by the parasite *Leucococcus carinii*, which infects red blood cells and monocytes. This condition leads to severe anemia and is commonly transmitted through the bite of mites, particularly during certain seasons. The disease typically occurs in the fall and is most prevalent in young chickens between 3 to 6 weeks of age, with high morbidity and mortality rates once symptoms appear.
The disease has a clear seasonal pattern, often peaking from June to September. The life cycle of *Leucococcus carinii* involves the mite as an intermediate host. The development of the parasite includes three stages: fission, gametogenesis, and sporulation. Stages II and III occur within the mite, and mature spores are then transferred to chickens through bites, leading to outbreaks.
Clinically, infected chickens show signs of depression, loss of appetite, and may have visible bleeding. Anemia is common, resulting in pale flesh and decreased egg production in hens for up to a month. Diarrhea with yellow-green, soft, or foul-smelling feces is also observed. Internal organs such as the liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys may exhibit hemorrhaging. Parasitic lesions or blood-filled cysts can be seen on the heart, abdominal fat, chest, and leg muscles.
Prevention measures include spraying chicken houses with insecticides like malathion (7%) or DDT (5%) during peak seasons to control mite populations and break the transmission cycle. Additionally, using rhinitis prevention solutions (400 pounds of water) for 3–5 days and administering diarrhea treatments (200 pounds of water) for the same duration can help manage the disease. Adding intestinal health supplements long-term at a rate of one ton per bag can also support overall flock health. For more information or assistance, please contact Mr. Yuan via phone.
