After the biogas slurry is released from the digester, it should not be used immediately. The slurry has a strong reducing property, which can compete with plant roots for oxygen in the soil. This may hinder seed germination and root development, leading to yellowing and wilting of crop leaves. Therefore, it's recommended to store the biogas slurry in a holding tank for 5–7 days before use. For better results, mix the biogas residue with phosphate fertilizer in a ratio of 10:1 and let it sit for 5–7 days.
Second, never apply undiluted biogas slurry directly to crops, especially when top-dressing seedlings. This can cause leaf burn and damage the plants. When applying as a top-dress, always dilute the slurry with water. A common practice is to mix it with an equal amount of water — that is, half the volume of the slurry with water.
Third, avoid direct application to dry soil. For crops grown on dry land, it’s best to apply the slurry using furrow injection or by making small holes in the soil and covering them afterward. In paddy fields, spread the slurry evenly over the field surface before plowing it into the soil.
Fourth, do not over-apply biogas fertilizer. It should be used in smaller quantities compared to regular animal manure. Excessive use can lead to excessive vegetative growth, poor air circulation between rows, and ultimately reduced yields.
Lastly, avoid mixing biogas slurry with alkaline materials like wood ash or lime. These substances can neutralize the nitrogen in the slurry, reducing its effectiveness and decreasing overall fertilizer efficiency. Always keep these materials separate to maintain optimal nutrient availability for your crops.
