Well, this is definitely one of those cases. Remember those cute red pom poms we made earlier? Spoiler alert: They were meant for this! We wanted to create something super sweet for Valentine's Day—adorable ballet flats for Aliyah. Naturally, I knew gold dots had to be involved since I just can't get enough of them. It's kind of become my signature thing, honestly.
After hunting high and low for plain ballet flats at a reasonable price (which turned out to be harder than expected for a small child), we finally hit the jackpot with a black pair from Walmart for just $5! Since the shoes weren’t exactly Valentine-y, we decided to jazz them up a bit for the occasion. That’s where the pom poms came in.
The idea is actually quite straightforward, and chances are you already have everything you need at home. So let’s dive right in, shall we?
Supplies Needed:
Once you're ready, simply dip your sponge into the gold paint, blotting off any excess on the lid of the paint container. Then press firmly onto the shoe. I started by creating all the dots first and went back over them again if they needed a bit more definition. I didn’t count or space them out evenly—I prefer a slightly imperfect look, which gives the shoes a unique charm.
To be honest, I loved how the shoes looked with just the sleek black leather paired with the shiny gold dots. Instead of gluing the pom poms directly onto the shoes, I decided to make them removable. Using the hot glue gun, I attached a few of Aliyah’s hair clips to the pom poms—one for each shoe and one extra for her hair. Now, whenever we want to add a pop of color, we just clip them on. When we don’t feel like having the extra flair, we can easily take them off.
All in all, this is a quick and easy project that requires just a bit of patience for the paint to dry before wearing. But trust me, the end result is worth it. These have quickly become Aliyah’s favorite shoes, and people always compliment them when she wears them. Honestly, what more could you ask for in a pair of shoes?
