Harvester seasonal storage to six defenses
The harvester plays a crucial role during the autumn harvest season, but after the busy summer period, it often faces long periods of inactivity. If not properly maintained, this downtime can significantly reduce its service life. To ensure longevity and optimal performance, the harvester should undergo what is known as the "six defenses" — essential steps to protect it during storage.
1. **Prevent Sun Damage**
Harvesters come in various sizes and models, some of which require professional storage. Unfortunately, some operators take shortcuts by using basic shelters that offer minimal protection. This leaves the machine vulnerable to damage from wind, rain, and sunlight. As the saying goes, "If you can afford the machine, you can afford to keep it." Proper storage is key to ensuring it remains in good condition for future use. Therefore, regardless of the model, it's best to store the harvester in a dedicated, covered space.
2. **Prevent Rust and Corrosion**
After each harvesting season, it’s important to thoroughly clean the machine both inside and out. Remove all dirt, debris, and leftover grains, then wash the unit with pressurized water, dry it completely, and store it in a dry area. Lubrication points should be cleaned and re-oiled or sealed with protective oil. Additionally, apply rust-proof paint to any exposed metal surfaces to prevent oxidation and deterioration.
3. **Prevent Mold and Deformation**
Improper storage of rubber and drive belts can lead to mold, deformation, or even cracking. These parts should be removed after use, wiped clean, and stored in a well-ventilated area to avoid moisture buildup. For drive chains, washing them with diesel or kerosene, drying, and then soaking them in oil for 15–20 minutes before wrapping in paper and storing in a dry place helps preserve their integrity.
4. **Prevent Rubber Aging**
Rubber components are particularly sensitive to sunlight and UV exposure, which can cause them to lose elasticity and crack over time. To prevent this, apply hot paraffin oil to the surface of rubber parts and store them in a cool, dry, and shaded location. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
5. **Prevent Plastic Deformation**
Springs, belts, cutter bars, and tires can become permanently deformed if left under stress or improperly stored. To avoid this, support heavy parts like tires, loosen pressure springs, remove and store belts separately, and lay the cutter bar flat or hang it vertically when not in use.
6. **Prevent Loss of Small Parts**
Small tools, spare parts, and fixtures are easy to misplace. It’s recommended to keep them organized, labeled, and stored by designated personnel. After use, they should be returned to their proper places to avoid loss or damage.
In addition, the battery should be removed and stored separately using either an intermittent charging method or a dry storage approach to maintain its charge and extend its lifespan. By following these six defensive measures, you can ensure your harvester remains in excellent condition for years to come.
