Livestock and poultry safe and efficient feeding management method in summer

<

During the hot summer months, livestock and poultry are often exposed to severe heat stress, which can significantly impact their growth, health, and productivity. To ensure their well-being and maintain optimal performance, it's essential to implement effective cooling and management strategies. Here are some key measures that can help reduce heat stress and improve production efficiency: First, maximize ventilation. Ensure that the housing is designed with natural airflow in mind, such as open sides or roof vents. In addition, use fans for both positive and negative pressure ventilation systems to enhance air circulation and lower the temperature inside the barns. Second, utilize evaporative cooling techniques. Spraying water on the roof of the buildings or using misting systems inside the pens can effectively lower the ambient temperature. It’s important to use cool, deep well water whenever possible to achieve better cooling results. Third, reduce stocking density. Overcrowding increases heat buildup and stress among animals. By lowering the number of animals per unit area and providing more space, you can improve comfort and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Fourth, adjust feeding times. Feed animals during cooler parts of the day—early morning and late evening—to avoid the peak heat. This not only helps them eat more comfortably but also improves feed intake and weight gain. Fifth, provide vitamin supplements. Adding 150 to 300 grams of vitamin C or other heat-stress reducing additives per ton of feed or drinking water can support immune function and reduce the negative effects of high temperatures. Sixth, enhance feed nutrient concentration. Since heat stress can reduce feed intake, it's important to increase the energy and nutrient density of the feed so that animals still receive adequate nutrition even when they eat less. By implementing these practical and science-based strategies, farmers can significantly improve animal welfare, productivity, and overall farm efficiency during the hot summer season. (Xin Xue)
