Researchers from the Brain Research Center at the University of Auckland in New Zealand have successfully transformed human skin cells directly into immature brain cells or neural precursor cells. They have developed a fast and efficient way to accomplish this transformation without experiencing intermediate stages of induced pluripotent stem cells transformed into embryonic stem cells. Bronwen Connor said, “This is a significant advancement for stem cell research around the world. It has the potential to cause neurodegeneration such as Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. The disease has a new understanding. One of the main advantages of this research is that it enables researchers to collect skin cells from patients with genetically related neurological diseases and then use these cells to construct brain cells affected by these diseases. . This will help people understand the mechanisms that lead to these diseases. It will allow people to test potential treatments on brain tissue. It will also allow people to replace damaged brain cells in the future. Although many research groups around the world are also investigating new ways to convert skin cells into brain cells, the current method developed by researchers at the University of Auckland Brain Research Center is unique. First, they are the only research team that uses adult skin cells to convert directly into brain cells, while other research groups are using this technology to study animal skin cells. Second, the University of Auckland research team is using only two genes, SOX2 and PAX6, to reprogram skin cells into neural precursor cells, while other international research groups are using 5 to 11 genes. One of the findings of these studies is to speed up the reprogramming process. It takes 4 months to convert the skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells and then convert them into neural precursor cells. If skin cells can be directly converted to neural precursor cells, it takes only one and a half months or 20 days depending on the type of technology used. The system developed by the researchers is also very effective, resulting in the efficient conversion of one cell type to another. This direct transformation can also overcome the problem of tumor formation when using embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells. The results of the study were recently published in the Journal of Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine.
