Low-salt diet can effectively lower blood pressure
A recent study conducted in the United States has revealed that for patients suffering from resistant hypertension, adopting a low-sodium diet may be more effective in lowering blood pressure than simply increasing medication dosage. The research, carried out by scientists at the University of Alabama, involved 12 participants who had been diagnosed with refractory hypertension and were already taking an average of three antihypertensive medications daily.
During the study, half of the participants followed a low-salt diet, consuming approximately half a teaspoon of salt per day, while the other half consumed a high-salt diet, equivalent to about 2.5 teaspoons of salt daily. The results showed that those on the low-salt diet experienced a significant drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Specifically, their systolic readings decreased by an average of 22.7 points (roughly 8 mmHg), and diastolic readings dropped by 9.1 points on average.
The researchers emphasized that patients with resistant hypertension often require multiple medications to manage their condition, yet many still struggle to achieve optimal blood pressure control. This study suggests that reducing daily sodium intake could be a powerful, non-pharmacological strategy to help these patients better manage their blood pressure. The findings highlight the importance of dietary changes as a complementary approach to traditional treatment methods, offering a potentially safer and more sustainable way to improve outcomes for those with difficult-to-control hypertension.
