A watertight and leak-free biogas digester must carefully consider several key factors during startup to ensure efficient and continuous gas production. Here are the essential points to keep in mind:
First, it is crucial to have an adequate amount of inoculum. Before loading the new digester, collect sludge and biogas from existing digesters, black sediments from old pits, pond sludge, or sewage and sludge from food factories, wineries, and slaughterhouses. These materials are rich in methane-producing bacteria and serve as excellent inoculants. The quantity of inoculum should be 10% to 30% of the total fermentation material. Mix the inoculum evenly with the raw material and add them together into the digester. Water for the system can be taken from biogas fermentation broth, domestic wastewater, river water, or pond water. While well water is acceptable, tap water should be avoided due to chlorine content. Industrial wastewater containing toxic substances must not be used.
Second, maintaining a suitable temperature is essential. Biogas digesters can operate effectively between 10°C and 60°C, with higher temperatures generally leading to increased gas production. Therefore, it's best to start the digester between April and October when temperatures are more favorable.
Third, the pH level of the fermentation material must be maintained between 6.5 and 7.5—slightly acidic to neutral. Too much acidity or alkalinity can inhibit microbial activity and reduce gas output.
