How to get good seedlings of cotton seedlings
At present, most cotton-growing regions in China rely on nutritional seedlings to ensure a healthy start for their crops. When evaluating the success of seedling emergence, two key factors must be considered: the germination rate and the seedling survival rate. However, many farmers are experiencing poor seedling emergence, which can be attributed to several factors.
One major issue is the use of certain cotton varieties that have a high proportion of autumn or late autumn peaches, which negatively affects germination. In contrast, seeds selected from permafrost or medium-term flowering varieties typically show a germination rate of over 80%. Another problem arises during seed processing, where damaged seeds often exceed acceptable limits due to lack of strict quality control. Additionally, some farmers fail to properly apply fungicides before or after sowing, or they use incorrect disinfectants, which can harm the seeds.
Weather conditions also play a role—this year, prolonged dry weather after sowing has led to poor watering practices, resulting in weak or failed seedlings. Soil depth is another factor; if the seeds are planted too deep or too shallow, it can lead to weak growth, shell entrapment, or crooked stems. Furthermore, many farmers neglect to spray protective agents on the leaves immediately after the seedlings emerge, leaving them vulnerable to disease.
Some farmers report that while the seedlings initially appear healthy, they later die off dramatically. Field inspections reveal that blight and anthrax are the primary causes, accounting for over 80% of the dead seedlings. Other causes include fertilizer burn, improper pesticide use, and heat damage. No instances of frost injury were observed during the investigation.
In general, high-quality cotton varieties have the potential to produce superior yields and quality. Compared to inferior varieties, they tend to have higher germination and survival rates. However, even top-tier varieties cannot guarantee optimal results without proper management. This year’s experience with elite cotton varieties highlights the need for better adoption of best practices.
To improve future seedling production, several steps should be taken. First, farmers should select high-maturity cotton varieties and avoid using low-quality seeds. Second, seeds should be pre-soaked 2–3 days before planting, and any damaged or unviable seeds should be removed, which can boost germination by 3–5%. Third, the seedbed should be changed annually to prevent the buildup of soil-borne pathogens. Fourth, the seedbed and covering soil must be disinfected. Once the two cotyledons appear, spraying with Bordeaux mixture, Puk, or Shileshi can help protect the young plants.
Finally, during the nursery phase, farmers should take precautions against drought, waterlogging, chemical toxicity, fertilizer damage, freezing, and heat stress. By following these practices, the chances of successful seedling emergence and growth will significantly improve.
