Summer fur care

<

In the past year, China witnessed a significant production of mink, fox, and other animal pelts. Currently, in major breeding regions, many farmers still hold large quantities of unsold hides. With the market showing signs of weakness and prices continuously declining, fur traders and manufacturers have stopped purchasing. Additionally, numerous middlemen are also holding onto large stockpiles of furs. As summer approaches, with high temperatures and humidity, improper storage can lead to serious issues such as insect infestation, moisture damage, and mold growth, which can severely degrade the quality of the fur and even render it worthless. To address these concerns, this article outlines essential tips for properly storing furs during the summer months. First, before storing any fur, it's important to dry the skins in a cool and well-ventilated area. Make sure to remove all excess fat and meat from the hide to prevent oil from seeping into the skin and causing damage over time. For small-scale storage, fur items like fox or suede with larger surfaces can be hung on a rope or wire, suspended about one meter above the ground using horizontal lines. Alternatively, they can be placed on wooden frames. Mink pelts, which have smaller surfaces, should be stored on wooden stands, and it's recommended to place camphor or insect repellent inside the storage area. Cover the top of the fur with a white cloth to protect it from dust. If you're dealing with a large quantity of furs, it’s best to store them in a dedicated warehouse. The ideal temperature range is between 15°C and 25°C, with humidity around 50%. The warehouse should have concrete flooring and allow for proper ventilation through doors and windows. Place a 20-centimeter-high wooden platform on the floor to keep the furs away from walls, aiding in air circulation and inspection. Before storage, sprinkle some camphor powder on each pelt. After placing them in the warehouse, spray an insect repellent to prevent pest infestations. Store the furs with the rough side facing down on wooden frames not exceeding 2.5 meters in height. Cover the surface with a white cloth to protect against dust. During the hot and humid midsummer season, furs are most vulnerable to mold and deterioration. Regular checks are essential. If the temperature rises too high, ensure good ventilation by opening windows or using fans. If humidity is excessive, increase air circulation or place desiccants like quicklime powder in the warehouse. If you notice a foul smell or see mold spots turning gray-green, move the fur to a cool, ventilated area immediately and gently brush off the mold. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can further damage the fur. To prevent rodent damage, place rat poison in corners and use sticky traps near columns and the base of storage units. When selling the furs, it’s important to clean them thoroughly. Remove dust, wash the skins with sawdust, comb the fur, and restore their original shape. Wring out a damp towel and gently brush the hair to make it smooth and shiny, ensuring the furs look their best and can fetch a higher price.
