DIY // Grout Cleaner
This post isn't exactly what you'd call glamorous.
If there's one thing I'm particular about, it's keeping my home clean, and grout is one of my biggest bugaboos. For a while, I tried to overlook the dingy grout in our kitchen, but eventually, it became impossible to ignore. So, I decided to tackle a small section to gauge how bad it really was—and boy, was it worse than I anticipated!
Since we recently moved into our new place, the kitchen was next on my list. The white tiles made the grout stains stand out even more, so I couldn’t hold back any longer. Being pregnant, I wanted to opt for a gentler cleaning method, especially since I only had short naps to work with. Pinterest came to the rescue with countless DIY cleaning solutions, and after browsing through various ideas, I decided to create my own recipe. To my delight, it’s been incredibly effective!
Here’s what goes into my homemade grout cleaner:
- ¼ cup of vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- A squirt of dish soap
I’ve been focusing on 5x5 foot sections at a time, and this amount generally covers two such areas. While you can definitely make a bigger batch, I prefer to keep it fresh for each session because it feels like it works better—though I admit, this is purely anecdotal. Since I’m only tackling a small portion daily to avoid straining my back, it also prevents me from having to store leftover cleaner.
Mix everything together, apply it to the grout, and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to loosen the dirt. Then, grab a sturdy brush (or two!) and start scrubbing! Once an area is clean, I wipe away the residue before moving on to the next section. After finishing the entire area, I follow up with a quick sponge mop over the freshly cleaned tiles. When I’m done with the kitchen, I’ll give it one final mop to ensure everything looks spotless.
This simple DIY approach is a fantastic way to refresh any tiled surface in your home—it just requires patience and elbow grease!
