Crayfish, commonly known as krill crayfish, are widely farmed in many parts of China due to the declining availability of wild populations. However, a major challenge in crayfish farming is the high rate of cannibalism among the animals, which significantly reduces survival rates.
The main causes of this behavior include overcrowding, insufficient food supply, poor water quality, inconsistent size during stocking, lack of hiding places, and even the aftermath of previous killings. High stocking density increases competition for resources and space, leading to aggressive interactions. When food is scarce, crayfish may turn on each other, especially since they are opportunistic eaters. Poor water conditions can also weaken their health, making them more prone to aggression. Additionally, if the crayfish vary greatly in size, larger individuals tend to prey on smaller ones, worsening the problem. Without adequate shelters like caves or aquatic plants, crayfish become stressed and more likely to attack one another.
To prevent these issues, farmers should ensure proper stocking densities, provide sufficient and balanced feed, maintain good water quality, and offer enough hiding spots. Planting aquatic vegetation or creating artificial shelters such as caves made from cans or plastic bottles can help reduce stress and aggression. It's also important to keep crayfish of similar sizes when stocking and to feed them appropriately, with about 60% of the daily ration given at night, as they are nocturnal. Regular water changes and monitoring pH levels are essential to maintain a healthy environment and improve survival rates.
By addressing these factors, farmers can significantly increase the success of their crayfish breeding operations.
