High-yielding Cultivation Techniques of Mazhu Bamboo Shoots

<

First, cultivation techniques: The planting density should be set at 4 meters by 4 meters or 4 meters by 5 meters, depending on the site conditions and bamboo species. The planting hole size should be approximately one time larger than the root ball of the seedlings, typically around 50 cm in width and 40 cm in depth. Place the mother bamboo into the hole, fill it in layers, compact the soil carefully, water thoroughly, and then cover with a layer of original soil that is more than 3 cm thick to ensure proper root establishment. Second, management measures: 1. Soil loosening: Regularly loosen the soil around the bamboo grove to allow for better air circulation and root development. This process helps the bamboo shoots emerge from the ground more easily. Be careful not to damage the young shoots during this process. 2. Fertilization: Apply fertilizer three times a year. The first application is in spring (basal fertilizer) in late March, after the soil has been cleared, to promote new shoot growth and increase bamboo yield. Use organic fertilizers such as farm manure at 25–50 kg per clump, or mature cake fertilizer at 7–10 kg per clump. Apply the fertilizer around the bamboo grove and immediately cover the soil after application. The second and third topdressing applications should take place at the beginning and peak period of the bamboo shoot season (June to September), to enhance shoot growth and productivity. Use human or animal manure (such as pig, cow, or sheep dung) at 10–15 kg per clump. Spread the fertilizer around the base of the bamboo grove, 1–2 feet away, and immediately cover it with soil. Avoid direct contact with tender shoots to prevent them from shrinking or dying, which could negatively affect yield and quality. 3. Soil covering: After the last bamboo shoot is harvested, the remaining shoots may turn light yellow or brown, becoming less tender and flavorful. Once the shoots are exposed, they gradually turn green or brown, leading to aging and reduced quality. Therefore, before the bamboo shoots are fully unearthed, apply finely crushed soil to protect them from aging and improve their quality. Cultivating the soil also helps develop larger shoots and increases overall yield. The thickness of the soil layer should generally be 15–30 cm (about 4–8 inches).
