STMicroelectronics Releases Prototype Design of Disposable Insulin Nanopump

STMicroelectronics and Debiotech have unveiled the first prototype of a groundbreaking disposable insulin nanopump, marking a major step forward in diabetes care. This innovative microdevice is designed to be mounted on a nearly invisible applicator, enabling continuous and precise insulin delivery for patients. The development represents a significant leap in medical technology, offering improved treatment efficiency and enhanced quality of life for individuals living with diabetes.

The new nanopump leverages advanced microfluidic MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology, allowing for highly accurate control over insulin dosing. It mimics the natural secretion process of insulin from pancreatic islets more closely than traditional methods, while also incorporating safety features that can detect potential malfunctions. This level of precision and reliability makes it a game-changer in the field of diabetes management.

Developed by Debiotech and industrialized by STMicroelectronics, this device marks the first application of microfluidic MEMS technology in diabetes treatment.

Benedetto Vigna, Vice President of STMicroelectronics’ MEMS division, expressed excitement about the progress, stating, “The successful initial trial of this revolutionary insulin nanopump brings us closer to commercialization.” He emphasized the importance of the partnership with Debiotech, highlighting how this small silicon-based device could significantly impact millions of lives globally.
