Biogas Liquid to Control Pests and Diseases
Biogas is a rich source of various biologically active compounds, including amino acids, trace elements, plant growth regulators, B vitamins, and certain natural antibiotics. These substances contribute to its effectiveness in pest control. Among the organic acids present, butyric acid, phytohormones such as gibberellin and indole acetic acid, along with vitamin B12, have been found to exhibit strong inhibitory effects on harmful bacteria. Additionally, ammonia and ammonium salts found in biogas slurry, combined with some naturally occurring antibiotics, can directly impact crop pests.
The use of biogas slurry for pest management has gained attention due to its environmental benefits. It is considered a "biological pesticide" because it leaves no chemical residue, causes no pollution, and does not lead to the development of pesticide resistance in pests. This makes it a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional chemical pesticides.
Biogas slurry has proven effective against several common agricultural pests and diseases. For example:
1. To control spider mites, 50 kg of clarified and filtered biogas slurry can be sprayed directly onto affected plants. Under normal conditions, red and yellow spider mites are typically inactive within 3–4 hours, with up to 98% of them dying within 5–6 hours.
2. For aphid control, 30 kg of biogas slurry per acre can be mixed with 50 grams of kerosene and 10 grams of detergent before spraying. Alternatively, during hot, sunny days, the slurry can be applied directly under sunlight to enhance its efficacy.
In addition to these applications, biogas slurry can also be used to manage other pests such as thrips, whiteflies, and fungal infections. Its natural composition makes it an ideal choice for organic farming practices, promoting both environmental health and crop productivity. With continued research and practical application, biogas slurry is expected to play an even greater role in sustainable agriculture.
