Fujian experts reminded the importance of late rice in cold weather
Soon after, the reporter learned from the local agricultural department that Putian City in Fujian Province has issued an emergency notice urging farmers to take preventive measures against the impact of low temperatures on late rice crops.
According to officials, recent weather patterns have seen the subtropical high-pressure system gradually shifting southward, allowing cold air from the north to move into the region. As a result, temperatures have started to drop, especially in mountainous areas where daily average temperatures have fallen below 25°C. This has raised concerns among farmers, as this year's early rice growth cycle was delayed, and typhoon disruptions during the planting and transplanting of late rice have caused a 3- to 5-day delay compared to previous years.
Currently, most of the late rice is in the young panicle differentiation stage, with some fields approaching the heading phase—both critical periods when the plants are highly sensitive to temperature changes. The notice calls for a comprehensive survey of planting varieties, transplanting schedules, and growth stages across the city. Special attention will be given to identifying "high-risk" fields currently in the vulnerable stages of panicle development and heading. These areas will be prioritized for cold disaster prevention and mitigation efforts.
Experts have also provided specific recommendations. Before the arrival of the cold snap, farmers are advised to flood their fields to maintain soil warmth and use smoke to raise the temperature around the rice plants. For fields at the heading stage, spraying a solution known as “900†can help promote earlier panicle development. After the cold spell, it’s important to drain the fields promptly, apply fertilizers outside the root zone, and provide quick-acting nutrients to enhance the rice’s resilience to cold stress.
With the growing threat of unpredictable weather, proactive measures are crucial to protect the harvest and ensure food security in the region. Farmers are encouraged to stay informed and follow official guidelines closely.
