Fujian experts reminded the importance of late rice in cold weather
Soon after, the reporter received information from the local agricultural department that Putian City in Fujian Province had issued an urgent notice, urging farmers to take preventive measures against the impact of low temperatures on late rice crops.
Recent weather patterns have shown a shift as the subtropical high-pressure system has gradually moved southward, allowing northern cold air to spread into the region. As a result, temperatures have started to drop significantly, especially in mountainous areas where daily average temperatures have fallen below 25°C.
This year’s early rice planting was delayed due to unfavorable growing conditions, and the late rice transplanting was further affected by typhoon activity during the critical planting period. Consequently, the transplanting schedule is now 3 to 5 days behind the usual timeline. Currently, most of the late rice is in the young panicle differentiation stage, with some fields approaching the heading phase—both of which are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
The emergency notice calls for a comprehensive survey of the planting varieties, transplanting dates, and growth stages of late rice. Special attention is being given to identifying “high-risk†fields that are currently in the vulnerable phases of panicle development and heading. These areas will be prioritized for cold disaster prevention and mitigation efforts.
Experts advise farmers to take immediate action before the next cold spell hits. They recommend flooding the fields to a deeper level to maintain soil warmth and using smoke to increase the temperature around the rice plants. For fields at the heading stage, spraying a "900" solution can help promote earlier panicle development.
After the cold weather passes, it's important to drain the fields promptly and apply top-dressing fertilizers outside the root zone. Quick-acting, heat-enhancing fertilizers should also be used to strengthen the rice plants' ability to withstand future temperature drops.
Farmers are encouraged to stay alert and follow these guidelines closely to minimize potential losses and ensure a healthier harvest.
