Citrus management after freezing should keep up
Since mid-January, the Yangtze River valley has experienced a sharp drop in temperatures, with minimums falling below -4°C. Dry and drizzly weather exacerbates the problem, leading to "dry freezing," which negatively affects the tree's health. To manage the post-freezing situation effectively, several key measures should be implemented:
**Water Spraying for Shade Protection**
After a freeze, when the sun comes out, it’s important to spray water on the trees or use misting systems to cool them down gradually. This helps prevent rapid temperature increases, slows the thawing process, and reduces water loss from leaves, thereby minimizing further damage. Once the weather clears, covering the canopy with straw or other materials can also help protect the trees from sudden sunlight exposure, allowing them to thaw more slowly and safely.
**Soil Insulation**
As soon as the ground thaws, it’s crucial to loosen the soil around the roots to a depth of 10–15 cm. This improves aeration, warms the soil, and encourages root activity, helping the tree recover its vigor. In dry orchards, watering the trees is essential to replenish moisture and reduce the impact of the freeze. On sunny days, careful irrigation can also help lower the risk of further cold stress.
**Fertilization**
After a severe freeze, citrus trees often experience weakened physiological functions. If the canopy is heavily damaged, applying fertilizer promptly is vital to stimulate new growth and restore the tree’s energy. Quick-acting nitrogen fertilizers and liquid manure should be used in small, frequent doses. For each tree, apply 10–25 kg of well-rotted manure or 0.5–1.5 kg of urea.
