How to prevent pepper powdery mildew

<

Pepper powdery mildew typically appears as dense white spots on the underside of leaves, which can spread across the entire leaf surface. In severe cases, the infected leaves may drop off, and the disease tends to occur under cool temperatures and during periods of continuous rainfall. The pathogen responsible for pepper powdery mildew remains dormant within the leaves during the vegetative growth stage. It becomes active when it produces spores, which then spread through the foliage. Once symptoms are visible, it becomes much harder to manage. Therefore, early prevention is crucial. It's recommended to apply protective fungicides every few days once the disease starts. If the infection has already taken hold in the field, systemic fungicides should be used, and they may need to be applied multiple times. Yellowing of lower leaves is common, but new growth should remain healthy and protected. Suitable protective fungicides include: 50% sulfur suspension diluted at 500 times, 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder at 500 times, 70% mancozeb wettable powder at 400 times, and 80% wettable powder at 500 times. For systemic control, options such as 50% carbendazim WP at 500 times, 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 1000 times, 15% triadimefon (triadimefonone) EC at 1000 times, 40% STAR 8000 at 10,000 times, 10% Shihshui water dispersible granules at 2000–3000 times, and 25% myclobutanil EC at 500–600 times are effective. A mixture of 40% polysulfide suspension at 400–500 times is also recommended. Combining 10% Shihshui water dispersible granules (3000 times) with 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder (500 times) can enhance effectiveness. When using systemic fungicides, it's important to monitor for resistance development. If carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl is no longer effective, consider switching to triadimefon or Fuxing. If these also fail, oxazole-based products may be a suitable alternative. Always rotate fungicides to reduce the risk of resistance and ensure long-term disease management. Regular monitoring and timely application are key to keeping pepper crops healthy and productive.
