Bangladesh develops garlic tablet bio-insecticide

Researchers in Bangladesh have used insects to dislike the taste of garlic to develop an environmentally friendly alternative to pesticides. Based on funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bangladesh’s Integrated Pest Control Laboratory in Maimensi, a northern city in the country, after four years of research, finally developed a garlic tablet, which can protect 0.4 hectares of farmland from insects. Garlic tablets are worth less than 1 cent per tablet and can be formulated to soak the crop. Bahadur Mayer, director of the Integrated Pest Control Laboratory, said that this garlic tablet is a biocide that will trigger a revolution in the elimination of chemical pesticides. He said that the germination rate of seeds soaked with garlic-based solvents is above 95%, whereas the germination rate of untreated seeds is only 56% to 60%. Garlic tablets not only protect the seedlings from pests, but also do not pollute the soil. At present, of Bangladesh’s 140 million people, 70% of them work in agriculture, so they need to import millions of dollars worth of pesticides every year. However, experts pointed out that the continued use of chemical pesticides will lead to a decline in soil fertility, but also increased the burden on farmers.
