How to classify and fertilize vegetables
Leafy vegetables include cabbage, spinach, leeks, and similar crops. During their growth, nitrogen-based fertilizers are typically used as a top dressing. However, it's essential to also supply phosphorus and potassium during the growing period. If nitrogen is insufficient throughout the entire growth cycle, plants may become stunted, with rough leaf tissues. In spring-grown leafy vegetables, this can lead to premature bolting. In the later stages of growth, if phosphorus and potassium are lacking, the formation of compact heads or bulbs may be hindered.
Fruit vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and legumes, have edible parts that are reproductive organs. During the seedling stage, these crops usually require more nitrogen to support early growth. However, excessive nitrogen can cause leggy growth, delay flowering, and result in flower or fruit drop. During the reproductive phase, the need for phosphate increases while nitrogen should be slightly reduced. Phosphorus and potassium help regulate nitrogen levels, ensuring balanced development and better fruit set.
Root vegetables, like radishes and carrots, have fleshy roots as their edible part. In the early growth stage, more nitrogen is needed to promote leaf development. As the plant enters the root growth phase, potassium becomes more important, and nitrogen should be carefully controlled to ensure that nutrients from the leaves are redirected to the roots, promoting larger, healthier fleshy roots. If nitrogen is applied too late or potassium is lacking, the above-ground growth may be excessive, resulting in small, low-quality roots and reduced yields.
In greenhouse vegetable cultivation, organic fertilizers are highly recommended. Greenhouse vegetables typically receive more fertilizer per unit area compared to those grown outdoors, and without rainwater to leach excess nutrients, most of the fertilizer remains in the soil. This can lead to high soil nutrient concentration, which hinders root absorption. Therefore, when growing vegetables in greenhouses, it's crucial to consider the residual effects of previous fertilizers. Using more organic fertilizer and less chemical fertilizer helps prevent salt buildup, which can harm subsequent crops and reduce overall productivity.
