Three Measures to Promote Chestnut Firming
First, the application of boron fertilizer has shown significant results. After conducting experiments, it was found that mixing 100-150 grams of borax with urea per chestnut tree and evenly distributing it about one meter away from the trunk produced excellent outcomes. A ditch approximately 15-20 centimeters wide was dug, and the fertilizer was uniformly spread into the trench before being immediately covered with soil. The results demonstrated an 8% increase in fruit set rate, a nearly 10% rise in yield, and improved grain quality with better color and plumpness.
Second, proper watering and protection are essential. Many farmers tend to reduce intercropping areas or use cattle for plowing, sometimes even plowing too close to the tree trunk—less than 30 centimeters. This can damage the roots and lead to up to two or three plowings per year. Such practices not only slow down tree growth but also hinder high yields. Additionally, during the flowering and nodule formation stages, chestnuts require a lot of water. If drought occurs and new roots haven’t developed yet, while old roots are cut off, this leads to fewer flower buds, a higher natural empty rate, and ultimately lower production. Therefore, using cattle for plowing is strictly prohibited.
Third, moderate intercropping should be practiced, ensuring that short-term and long-term crops are properly balanced. It's important to follow the principle of compatibility between chestnut trees and intercropped plants. When selecting crop varieties, it's best to use low-growing species such as soybeans or medicinal herbs. As the chestnut seedlings grow (around five years old), they can be combined with livestock farming to cultivate perennial grasses that thrive in shaded conditions and are drought-tolerant. This approach not only maximizes land use but also supports long-term sustainability and productivity.
