Three Measures to Promote Chestnut Firming

<

First, the application of boron fertilizer has shown significant results. After conducting experiments, it was found that mixing 100-150 grams of borax with urea per chestnut tree and evenly distributing it about one meter away from the trunk yielded excellent outcomes. A trench of 15-20 centimeters in width was dug, and the fertilizer was uniformly spread into the ditch before covering it with soil immediately. The results were impressive: the fertility rate increased by 8%, the yield rose by nearly 10%, and the nuts became plumper, more colorful, and of higher quality. Second, proper watering and root protection are essential. Many farmers tend to reduce intercropping areas or use oxen for plowing, which often leads to deep tilling close to the chestnut tree's trunk—less than 30 centimeters. This practice damages the roots, causing them to be lifted or disturbed. Tilling two to three times a year not only slows down the tree's growth but also hinders high yields. Additionally, during the flowering and nodule formation period, chestnuts require a lot of water. If drought occurs, and new roots haven't developed yet while old roots are cut, the number of nodules decreases, and the natural empty pod rate increases, ultimately leading to lower production. Therefore, using oxen for plowing is strictly prohibited. Third, moderate intercropping should be practiced, ensuring that short-term and long-term crops are properly balanced. It is crucial to follow the principle of compatibility between chestnut trees and intercropped plants. When selecting crop varieties, dwarf-type plants such as soybeans and medicinal herbs are preferred. As the chestnut seedlings grow (around five years old), they can be combined with livestock farming to cultivate perennial grasses that thrive in shaded conditions and are tolerant of various environments. This approach not only maximizes land use but also supports sustainable agricultural practices.
