Bionic eye transplant surgery blind people to see the light
On August 19, 2008, a groundbreaking development took place in Sydney, Australia, as two scientists prepared to perform the country's first bionic eye transplant. Their goal is to restore vision to the blind and offer them a new way to see the world.
According to reports from the Central News Agency, this revolutionary bionic eye device draws upon technology similar to that used in artificial hearing aids, which have helped people with hearing impairments regain their sense of sound. The new device aims to give patients suffering from degenerative vision conditions a basic level of sight, reducing their reliance on walking sticks or guide dogs.
Dr. Cologne and Dr. Zhou Delhi, researchers at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, believe their technology could be the first and most affordable bionic eye device available globally. Unlike traditional methods that rely on microphones, their approach uses a camera and advanced electrode systems, allowing patients to perceive light and movement in a more natural way.
Currently, around 23 research teams worldwide are working on developing the first functional bionic eye. Scientists hope that once perfected, the device can be permanently implanted into the eye, offering enough resolution for users to recognize faces or read large text.
This year’s successful animal trials have given the team confidence, and they now seek additional funding from the Australian government to begin human testing. Their plan includes conducting initial trials on cadavers before moving on to three volunteer participants by the end of the year.
The scientists also mentioned that if the bionic eye is successfully developed, its cost is expected to be comparable to that of current artificial hearing devices, around 20,000 yuan.
