[American Bull Fertilizer] Fertilizer and Pesticide Mixing May Lose 200,000 RMB

<

Luo Jianbo, a fruit farmer from Laoshan Village in Weizheng Town, Sihui City, Guangdong Province, recently faced a devastating loss after applying a fertilizer and two pesticides to his nearly mature Shatangju trees in early November. The result was catastrophic—over 2,000 of his trees were infected with an unknown disease, leading to an estimated loss of 200,000 yuan. For Luo, this month has been one of deep despair, as the once-thriving orchard now faces uncertainty. Since 1987, Luo has been growing Shatangju in the area, making him a seasoned farmer with nearly 20 years of experience. He never imagined that something so severe would happen. “There have never been any big problems before. I didn’t think anything like this would happen this year,” he said, his face showing signs of worry and exhaustion. The incident began on November 2, when Luo purchased three products from a local agrochemical dealer named Laodeng: potassium dihydrogen phosphate (a foliar fertilizer), abamectin pesticide, and another pesticide labeled as "rust potential." Thinking the combination would boost the health of his trees, he mixed them together and applied them. But within three days, strange black spots appeared on the fruit, spreading rapidly across the entire orchard. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen such a thing,” Luo told reporters, struggling to hold back tears. He had planted these trees for over two decades, and now, they were all affected. He couldn’t understand what went wrong. After the incident, Luo tried to trace the problem back to the products used. He recalled that his brother-in-law, who also bought the same pesticides, hadn’t used the foliar fertilizer and had no issues. This raised questions about whether the potassium dihydrogen phosphate was the culprit. He approached the dealer, Laodeng, but the response was unclear. Laodeng claimed the product was genuine and passed through proper channels, suggesting the issue might lie with the general distributor in Guangzhou. When contacted, the distributor promised to investigate, but their initial reply was vague, citing possible causes like mixing products or environmental factors. Luo then reached out to the manufacturer in Anhui, who confirmed the product was up to standard. However, the root cause of the disease remained uncertain. Some experts suggested it could be due to the chemical reaction between the three products, rather than the fertilizer itself. Agricultural officials in Sihui were unhelpful, offering no clear guidance. Frustrated, Luo decided to seek help from relevant authorities in Guangzhou to verify the quality of the fertilizer. If proven to be counterfeit, he planned to take legal action. Otherwise, he feared he would bear the loss alone. Experts like Huang Zhongge, a deputy section chief at the Provincial Department of Agriculture, warned farmers to be cautious when mixing fertilizers and pesticides, as improper combinations can lead to unexpected consequences. For Luo Jianbo, the lesson was clear—but the damage had already been done.
