[American Bull Fertilizer] Fertilizer and Pesticide Mixing May Lose 200,000 RMB

<

Luo Jianbo, a fruit farmer from Laoshan Village in Weizheng Town, Sihui City, Guangdong Province, has faced a devastating loss this year. In early November, he applied a fertilizer and two pesticides to his nearly matured shatangju trees, hoping to boost their growth before harvest. However, the results were disastrous—his orchard was hit by an unknown disease, leading to an estimated loss of 200,000 yuan. For Luo, who has been growing shatangju since 1987, this is the first time he has encountered such a problem. The affected trees are part of a total of over 2,000 that he planted this year. The disease manifested as dark spots on the fruit, which spread rapidly across the entire orchard within just three days. “It’s like something out of a nightmare,” Luo said, expressing deep frustration. He had used three products: potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer, abamectin pesticide, and another pesticide labeled for rust control. All were purchased from a local dealer named Laodeng. Initially, he believed the products were safe, but after the sudden outbreak, he began questioning their quality. His brother-in-law, who also bought similar products but did not use the fertilizer, had no issues with his trees. This raised doubts about whether the fertilizer was the culprit. Luo reached out to the dealer, but the response was unclear. The dealer claimed he wasn’t responsible and referred the issue to the general distributor in Guangzhou. After some back-and-forth, the distributor finally agreed to investigate, but their conclusion was inconclusive. They suggested it could be due to the fertilizer, the mixing of chemicals, or even environmental factors like dry weather and soil conditions. When the manufacturer in Anhui was contacted, they denied any issues with the product. However, the problem persisted, leaving Luo in limbo. He now faces the possibility of losing 200,000 yuan, with no clear resolution in sight. According to Huang Zhongge, a deputy section chief at the Provincial Department of Agriculture, the mixing of multiple products might have caused a chemical reaction, leading to the damage. He advised farmers to carefully follow instructions when using fertilizers and pesticides to avoid similar situations. For Luo Jianbo, the future remains uncertain. He plans to report the issue to the relevant authorities in Guangzhou and seek further investigation. But with no clear answers, he's left wondering if the loss will ultimately fall on his shoulders.
