How to determine the appropriate fertilization location

Fertilization should take place in areas where the soil is close to the crop without causing harm, and where the moisture level is just right. If fertilizer is placed too near to seeds or young plants, it can damage them; if it's too far away, the plants won't be able to absorb it effectively. Fertilizers need to be soluble in water to be taken up by the plant, which is why they are best applied in soils with adequate moisture. For crops like wheat, corn, and vegetables, fertilizers can be spread across the field, applied in furrows, injected into the soil, or layered at different depths. For fruit trees, which have deep and wide-reaching roots, fertilizers are often applied in circular patterns around the trunk or in holes dug around the root zone. According to a recent survey on fertilization methods for wheat and corn, approximately 69% of farmers in our country use broadcast application, while less than 30% use banding or placement techniques. Very few apply foliar fertilizers. Scientific studies and practical farming experience show that broadcast application leads to 10% to 30% more nutrient loss compared to banding or placing fertilizer closer to the roots, which can result in lower yields due to insufficient nutrition. For crops like soybeans, the ideal placement is about 5 to 6 cm away from the seed, both horizontally and vertically. During sowing, layered fertilization can be used, with fertilizer placed 5 to 10 cm below the seed. The timing and location for top-dressing depend on the type of crop and its growth stage. As the plant matures, the fertilizer should be placed further away from the base. On sandy soils, fertilizers should be applied deeper, while on clay soils, they should be placed more shallowly. In general, it's recommended to apply fertilizer 5 to 10 cm from the side of the plant and 6 cm below the soil surface. This ensures optimal nutrient uptake and supports healthy plant development.
