Mariculture advocates "single species"

<

Professor Chen Liqiao from East China Normal University is the first post-doctoral researcher on aquatic animals cultivated in China. He proposed in his recently completed project “Nutrient Demand, Metabolism, and Regulation of Major Mariculture Animals in China”: “At present, China's marine aquaculture industry must promote 'single-species', avoid 'full bloom' and duplicate construction."

Marine aquaculture production ranks first in the world

"Fish, shrimp, shellfish, algae, and ginseng" to achieve marine aquaculture is known as the technological revolution in China's blue industry. According to statistics, China's total aquaculture production accounts for more than 70% of the world's total production. The aquaculture industry has provided more than 30% of the high-quality protein source for our people. It is estimated that by 2020, the demand for marine food in China will reach 40 million tons per year.

However, due to the lack of attention to the sustainability of development and the improvement of output quality, a series of problems have arisen in the development of mariculture industry: the coverage of good varieties is low, the decline of major breeding germplasms is prominent, and the development of local mudflats is over-exploited and the occurrence of diseases is frequent; The problem of quality and safety of cultured products is prominent, and problems with drug residues occur from time to time. The aquaculture industry has a strong dependency on fishmeal resources and lacks alternative products. These problems have seriously hampered the sustainable development of marine aquaculture in China. Among them, the lag in the development of the modern feed industry is the main bottleneck restricting the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.

Marine products "malnutrition"

“Everybody knows that seafood is rich in nutrients, but it is very rare to know that many feeds are 'malnutrition' due to the backward feed research and development technology. According to Professor Chen Liqiao, developed countries in Europe and America often use “single species Do "strategies" to make one species the strongest in the world so as to ensure the maximization of profits. For example, Norway’s salmon production has consistently accounted for most of the world’s total production. In the breeding process, Norway attaches great importance to the nutritional configuration of feed and makes full use of high-tech technologies to make this industry stable and sustainable. Although China's aquaculture industry has developed rapidly, it does not attach importance to the research on aquatic animal nutrition and feed development.

The main feed ingredient for seafood farming is fishmeal, which is an important source of high-quality animal protein. Most of the current feed ingredients must be imported. Since the price of imported fishmeal has doubled in recent years, the development of domestic fishmeal substitutes and new protein sources has not kept pace, resulting in a large number of feedstuffs and fresh fish. Over time, it is not only easy to cause inadequate nutrient intake of fish, but worse, it will lead to the abuse of aquatic products and antibiotics, followed by food safety and environmental pollution. The 2006 treasure incident is a typical example.

Less than 40% artificial feed

The development of quality feed is the material basis for the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry. However, due to the weak research foundation of China's aquatic nutrition, the development of the feed industry lags far behind that of developed countries. The penetration rate of artificial feed is less than 40%, and the market gap of aquatic feed is as high as 20 million tons per year. Prof. Chen Liqiao believes that at present, China should focus on the aquaculture species, from the perspective of nutritional physiology of aquatic animals, study the nutritional control technology of aquatic animal product quality, and pay attention to the impact of additives and drug residues on food safety.

Professor Chen Liqiao said that "development and security" will be the two major aquaculture aquaculture themes in China. Aquatic animal nutrition research is the basis of the aquaculture feed industry. Therefore, as the world’s largest aquaculture producer, China’s development of aquatic animal nutrition fish feed should be given priority in its development for a relatively long period in the future. He said: "Without the support of the modern feed industry, it is unthinkable to realize the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry."
