Rare flower plant ramming phenology observation and cultivation techniques
Kolkwitzia amabilis, commonly known as the Chinese honeysuckle, was first discovered and named by the German botanist Richard Kolkwitz in 1901. This rare and precious plant is native to China and is considered an important species for conservation. It is a deciduous shrub characterized by its compact growth, dense trunk, and tightly packed inflorescences that produce vibrant, colorful flowers. Due to its ornamental value, it has gained significant attention among horticulturists and garden enthusiasts.
This plant thrives in slightly acidic cinnamon soil with a pH range of 5.0 to 6.0, making it suitable for growing on embankments or well-drained areas. Its growth cycle is influenced by temperature changes throughout the year. In early April, when temperatures are still low, the pods develop slowly, and flower length remains relatively unchanged. By mid-April, as temperatures rise, the buds grow more rapidly. From late April onward, with stable temperatures, the flowering process becomes consistent, and the flower length remains fairly constant.
The growth of Kolkwitzia amabilis follows a specific developmental pattern. From late February to early March, apical buds begin to germinate and differentiate into young leaves. By late March to early April, the leaves continue to develop and enter the reproductive phase. In mid-April, the conical complex inflorescence starts to form at the top of the stem and on lateral short shoots, followed by bud emergence. The flowering period typically begins in late April and lasts until early May, with individual plants blooming at different times, resulting in a total flowering duration of about 20 days. By early to mid-May, the plant enters the late flowering stage and eventually moves into the fruiting phase.
Fruit development occurs between July and August, producing two achene-like dry fruits that are covered in yellow thorns. Each fruit has five elongated teeth at the apex. Deciduous leaves start to fall in early November, with full leaf drop occurring by late November.
For cultivation, it's recommended to provide adequate irrigation and fertilization before the bud burst in late February and again before flowering in early April. While the plant is not overly sensitive to temperature, it performs best when kept around 10–22°C during the flowering period, which helps enhance the vibrancy of the blooms. If height control is necessary, weak branches should be pruned regularly.
One challenge in propagating Kolkwitzia amabilis is that its seeds often fail to develop properly or may not be present at all, limiting sexual reproduction. Therefore, vegetative propagation through cuttings is highly recommended. The best time to take cuttings is in early spring, around March. Before planting, disinfect the soil using potassium permanganate. Choose a shaded area and take one-year-old healthy cuttings. Soaking them in a rooting solution—such as a mixture of 700 mg/kg naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 500 mg/kg indole acetic acid (IAA)—can significantly improve root formation. After planting, ensure the soil remains consistently moist (over 50% moisture content), and reduce watering after about two weeks. Rooting usually occurs within 2 to 3 months, and the cuttings can then be transplanted successfully.
