In winter, when keeping earthworms outdoors, it's important to adjust the warming methods based on the size of the area and local conditions. The goal is to maintain a minimum trampoline temperature of 10–15°C, which helps boost the growth and reproduction rate of earthworms. Some farmers use a thin layer of plastic film over the trampoline. While this can raise the temperature by about 8–10°C on sunny days, it doesn’t provide consistent warmth, especially during cold mornings when the trampoline is only 1–2°C warmer than the outside. Thus, a single layer of film isn’t enough to ensure even heating.
To achieve better results, two effective methods can be used. First, using two layers of film with a straw curtain in between. This method is simple and cost-effective, and it can increase the temperature by up to 6°C compared to a single layer. It also helps regulate temperature in March, preventing sudden drops. When the temperature inside the trampoline is 6°C lower than under a regular film cover, this setup helps avoid extreme cold.
The second method involves building a bamboo-frame plastic greenhouse. This approach requires minimal investment but offers excellent results. An average daily temperature of 10°C over 150 cold days equates to 1,500°C of accumulated heat, which is equivalent to 75 days at 20°C. In other words, this method effectively extends the growth period by about two months, allowing crickets to grow faster and reproduce earlier. This creates a solid foundation for high yields throughout the year.
Inside the plastic greenhouse, it’s essential to cover the north and west sides with straw curtains to block cold winds. A straw cage should be placed in the middle of the trampoline for ventilation, followed by a thin layer of film. In colder regions, you can add an extra layer of film along with a straw curtain for added insulation. These strategies help create a stable and warm environment, ensuring optimal conditions for earthworms and crickets during the winter months.
