Exemes**, sold under the brand name Aromasin among others, is a medication used to treat breast cancer. It is a member of the class of aantiestrogens known as aromatase inhibitors. Some breast cancers require estrogen to grow. Those cancers have estrogen receptors (ERs), and are called ER-positive. They may also be called estrogen-responsive, hormonally-responsive, or hormone-receptor-positive. Aromatase is an enzyme that synthesizes estrogen. Aromatase inhibitors block the synthesis of estrogen. This lowers the estrogen level, and slows the growth of cancers.



Application

Aromasin is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Exemes** is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Exemes** decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers.

Exemes** is usually not used in women of childbearing age.



MAXIMUM DOSAGE

Adults
25 mg/day PO; if a potent CYP3A4 inducer is co-prescribed the maximum is 50 mg/day PO. Higher doses are tolerated but do not result in clinically significant increases in estrogen suppression.

Elderly
25 mg/day PO; if a potent CYP3A4 inducer is co-prescribed the maximum is 50 mg/day PO. Higher doses are tolerated but do not result in clinically significant increases in estrogen suppression.

Adolescents
