Purple Medlar Wood Beijing Olympic Games Field Construction Greening Tree Species

Buddleja alternifolia Maxim, commonly known as "Drunk Fish Wood," is a beautiful ornamental shrub belonging to the genus Buddleja in the family Scrophulariaceae. This species has been carefully selected and cultivated by the Ningxia Forestry Research Institute for many years, making it a notable addition to landscape design. It can grow up to 3 meters tall, with a dense and full canopy that makes it an excellent choice for gardens and public spaces.

This shrub produces violet flowers that are arranged in dense, cone-shaped clusters. The blossoms are not only visually appealing but also emit a sweet, fragrant aroma. Its beauty and unique scent have earned it the poetic name "Drunk Fish Wood," symbolizing its captivating presence in nature.

Flowering occurs from May to June, marking the end of the early spring bloom season, which includes plants like Forsythia, Clove, and Prunus triloba. By blooming later, it adds vibrant color to the landscape during the summer months, extending the visual appeal of gardens and urban areas.

The original habitat of Buddleja alternifolia is the semi-arid regions east of the Helan Mountains in Ningxia. More than 20 years ago, researchers discovered its remarkable drought and cold resistance, along with its pleasant fragrance. These characteristics led to its introduction into various soil environments outside its native region. After extensive research on its cultivation and stress tolerance, it has been successfully promoted in cities across different climates, including Beijing, Harbin, and Shandong, where it has shown excellent adaptability and performance.

Last year, the Ningxia Forestry Research Institute was invited to participate in Beijing's "New Urban Landscape Improvement Conference." As a result, "Drunk Fish Wood" was chosen as one of the key tree species for afforestation projects related to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. This recognition highlights its value not only as an ornamental plant but also as a resilient and environmentally beneficial species for urban greening efforts.
